Bookarts Website

November 22, 2010

I spent hours looking at this site. Lists, all I see are lists. Information about exhibitions I can’t attend and publications I can’t look through. Classes I won’t be taking and letterpress. The only thing I took from this site is a few pictures of actual books in the Exhibition list. I clicked on every link.

I don’t understand what I am suppose to be using as a source. Also, a critical analysis? What does that mean? Analysis of the site as a whole or of a specific artist mentioned?

The type of work that is being described in this site is not the type of work I do. These books are almost all codex books that are focused more on the content and letterpress than the book itself. I am interested in the form of the book and in all the links I’ve clicked on and all the pictures I’ve looked through, only a few of them relate to how I work. I even looked through the site’s list of “bookarts” links and couldn’t find one that was helpful or interesting.

I decided to google book arts and structure. I found a different site and will be looking at that.

Well…

November 22, 2010

Here I am. Stuck. Not sure what to do for this last project in edition of 10. Been working on mockups al weekend and have come to no conclusion. Every idea has either fallen into the realm of the not possible or a pile of stupid ideas. I am really not sure what I’m doing for the final. This is my proposal for the project, however it will change when I get a real idea. Believe me it will change.

James and the Giant Peach
Altered book
Sculptural

This edition of 10 will be a sculptural artist book. Using 10 copies of James and the Giant Peach, I will be creating a sculpture from the pages to reveal the peach, James, and various characters. The sculpture will be held by the book as a pedestal or environment for these sculptures. By working in an assembly-like fashion, I will be able to ensure the books will be an edition and not one-of-a-kind pieces.

Materials:
James and the Giant Peach (10 copies)
Glue
Exacto Knife
Cutting board
Extra paper

I can find used copies of the books for around $5 each. Everything else I have.

Okay, I’ve made 2 mockups specific to this project. I’m going to include materials for both. I haven’t decided which to move forward with. (In case anyone is reading this and wants to know where to get some of the things I’ll include that as well)

Book board (Utrecht)

Papers (Utrecht/Broadway Paper)

PVA Glue (Utrecht)

Transparencies (Digicopy)

Bonefolder (Utrecht)

Xerox Transfer Marker (Utrecht)

Watercolors

Pencils

Visual library?! What?!

September 13, 2010

I guess it’s an interesting concept, maybe not practical. That’s what my initial thoughts of libraries are: practical, useful, etc. But, reorganizing books visually will lead to different perspectives on ‘knowledge’ and how that’s presented, shared, and stored. I guess their choice of the word ‘library’ threw me. I saw it as taking a structure and changing it for the sake of changing it. Like organizing numbers by shape, interesting but not really useful to the numbers. However, the thought and research that would go into it may lead in a number of directions, some useful.

This idea of visually organizing information is something I will be using in this first project to display three perspectives. Presenting images as the basis for giving information will communicate much differently than reading text linearly. Also, in following with the nonlinear path, the book I am creating will be presented in a similar way.

GALAXIESSSSSSSS!!!!!

September 13, 2010

I’m choosing galaxies as my subject for this first project. I plan to use collage, text, and other mixed media to present three different perspectives on the stars above. I will be looking at the present view backed with contemperary sciences, historical perspectives of western european, and perspectives of native cultures. I may present more than three perspectives.

I will be using a book format that I created last year to display these perspectives in-the-round as the format creates a sculptural view of a book.

Resurrecting this blog for another book class. First thoughts:

A.nnotate is an interesting concept. Amber is annoying… not really. But I opened the first reading from A.nnotate and all I see is little yellow boxes everywhere with Ambers name. It made reading a little challenging because my eyes continued to jump to the nearest yellow highlight. I lost my train of thought, train of reading, and any other train leaving the station.

Also the whole of the class feels a little like a Fried Egg Jellyfish. It seems really interesting and I can’t wait to get into it but there doesn’t seem to be a real way in. No substance. Nothing feels real. I think it’s because Leslie has been ill. Of course it isn’t her fault but without her the class hasn’t solidified.

This is also fogging the ideas I have for the first project. I think talking about it in class will help a great deal. The speaker phone was a little impersonal. I have the same trouble with voicemail. If it’s not live, it’s not living and therefore a robot. I don’t talk to robots.
